Lucy Campbell – art of myths and fairy tales

There are two working artists in the UK with the name Lucy Campbell. One distinguishes herself by using the name Lucy B Campbell. The artist highlighted here is straightforward Lucy Campbell, although there is nothing straightforward about her life.

She is certainly far travelled. Born in Perth, Scotland she has lived in north Pakistan, the south coast of England before settling in Barcelona for a period of time.

She has also visited China, Mexico , Guatemala and much of Europe. But it is her early childhood and nature , myths and fairy tales which inspire much of her work.

Darkly So

It was during her time in Barcelona that Lucy decided to become a full-time painter. She has now returned to her native Scotland and while self taught Lucy is now prolific at producing original art.

Prior to becoming a full time painter, Lucy Campbell studied at Sussex University and then employed her creative energy in interior design.

Her style is best described as illustrative and at times humorous. Her paintings often involve girls, surrounded by an air of ambiguity- a little lost in today’s world but more content in lands of mystery. Often a little character , known affectionately as Molly, appears.

Study for Child King

It is often her own childhood memories which influence her paintings. Lucy has vivid recollection, as a young child, being lost in woods. Although initially frightened, she found the experience exhilarating. She enjoyed the closeness to nature in those woods- the colours, the light , the flowers and the dense foliage. Those memories are reflected in mush of her work, driven by that sense of wonder.

Her paintings at times appear naive but they are tender with hints of darkness. Just as childhood memories are to most of us.

Ian MacIntyre was born in Perthshire, Scotland. He graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1981 and currently resides with his wife and fellow artist Hilke in the East Neuk of Fife. He describes his work—which has been shown all over the UK and New York—as “cartoon-like simplification/distortion with chopped up shapes, quickly cut lines and a high tonal contrast.” Ian not only paints, but creates relief prints in his signature style. His original art has been shown in exhibitions such as Artistic License London; Niedermaier New York; Dobbs Ferry New York; Phillips Glasgow, and many more. Some of his works can currently be seen at City Art Centre Edinburgh and Perth Museum and Art Gallery.

Hilke MacIntyre was born in Germany and raised near Kiel. She graduated from the College of Art & Architecture in Kiel, before moving to Scotland in 1996. Hilke paints as well utilizing linocutting and ceramics as a medium for her art. Her unique style is influenced by early 20th century primitivism as well as the contemporary movement. Hilke says of her work, “I enjoy the direct visual pleasure of composing shapes, colours and patterns, looking for an individual picture of the world I see around me.” She has been selected many times to exhibit her work at the Annual Show of the Royal Scottish Academy and was commissioned for illustrations by the East Neuk Music Festival and the National Youth Choir of Scotland. Her work can be seen at the Attic Gallery in Swansea and Cambridge Contemporary Art in Cambridge, among other places.

Her work can be divided into two areas – animals and everything else. Her love of animals comes through clearly in her work. As evidenced in her soft ground etching titled ‘Happy Dog’

Theresa Pateman holds regular exhibits and is also teaching printmaking at The Institute Art Centre and The Hampstead School of Art. Her courses range from collagraph, to dry point, to monoprint, to solar plate etching. With an emphasis of technique, her students are often ready to display work at the end of the course, if they so desire. Her first show was in 1990 and she has regularly participated in about one show a year ever since. In June 2010 Theresa participated in a showing in Kilburn, London. She attended the Coventry Faculty of Art and graduated in 1983. She currently lives in London.

:Another animal piece is her work ‘Belonging’. This piece has three cat bodies with faces that appear half human/half feline. The judicious use of color, and the placing of the cats at night, give the ground etching an eerie quality.

Theresa Pateman – printmaker – everything else

Her other works take regular objects and add quirky qualities to them. ‘The Number 10′ is a beautiful rendering of an iconic red double-decker bus.

‘The Golden Slipper’ is a lovely portrayal of a modern shoe with a nod back to Cinderella and her glass slipper.

Golden Slipper

Most recently, Theresa provided illustrations for ‘Caprice’ a book of poems composed by Beryl Smyter. The stark black and white images suit the poetry and Theresa is the perfect illustrator as she shares Smyter’s love of countryside and pets.

In Theresa’s own words: “I love discovering different techniques within the subject of printmaking. Each image may require a different approach – but soft ground Etching is my preferred medium. Amongst other subjects I like working on images of confectionery from childhood like Iced gems and Custard creams, which are still around today for all to enjoy.”

Fantasy art is a genre in original art that depicts magical or other supernatural themes, ideas, creatures or settings. Common themes in contemporary fantasy art often involve forms of divine interventions and other magical or supernatural forces. This style of original art depicts imagined events such as daydreams to the more psychologically charged delusions and hallucinations.

One of the best known fantasy artist is John Anster Fitzgerald (English, 1819-1906), whose (oil on board) canvas Fairy’s Lake, 1866, hangs in the Tate Gallery, London.

With the ongoing popularity of science fiction, there are a number of excellent contemporary artists producing fantasy art. One of the best is John Penney.

Leading Contemporay Fantasy Artist: John Penney

John Penney ( UK) original art can be described as magical realism – combining fantasy, with visual drama, and more than a touch of humour.

As John Penney says of his contemporary art:

“I draw on at least aspects of my style of painting from Paul Delvaux, Henri Rousseau, maybe even Dali. I avoid vague abstraction whilst also not aiming for photographic realism – trying to convey mood and impact through dramatic colour use and often exaggerated and complicated perspective, and a feeling of “narrative” to the painting compositions” .
