Monday 16 April:BBC 4 at 9.00pm “Ceramics – How They Work” REPEATED Thursday 19 April at 11.20pm:

Ceramics: How They Work?
The final (third) episode of this fascinating series on ceramics. The presenter , Mark Miodownik, examines the naturally occurring materials used to create works of art in ceramics and glass. He explores the impact these naturally occuring substances have made in the world of art. His approach is part scientific as he examines the properties of glass and concrete. But he also has an eye to the future and speculates on possible developments in cermaics and there impact.

Tuesday 17 to Friday 20 April: Sky Arts 2 around 6.00pm “Tim Marlow – Great artists.

A whole series of repeats from Tuesday thro’ to Friday each night at around 6.00pm on Sky arts 2. Each night there are two back to back programmes. Tim Marlow examines and explains the works of many leading artists including Giotto, Leonardo, Raphael and Bruegel.

Thursday 12 April: Sky arts 2 at 6.30pm ” Tim Marlow on Anthony Caro at Chatsworth.

Sir Anthony Caro

Presenter, Tim Marlow, visits Chatsworth House, where in its gardens there is a retrospective exhibition of the original art of Sir Anthony Caro, pioneering sculptor. The exhibition covers four decades of Caro’s abstract steel sculptures. The exhibition runs from until 1 July 2012. Anthony Caro was born in 1924, studied sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools in London and worked as an assistant to Henry Moore. Caro has played a major role in the development of 20th century sculpture in the UK. His works are large, abstract and often brightly painted.

How artists have depicted the crucifixion:

The symbolism of the crucifixion has been inspirational to many artists throughout history.

Here we look at a handful examples of how the interpretation has evolved along side developments in art.

Michelangelo 1546-1550

We start with a fresco by Michelangelo completed in 1550.

Caravaggio 1601

The crucifixion was a popular subject to many Baroque artists. Here are two outstanding examples.

Diego Velazquez 1632

Edgar Degas 1861

Moving on to the Impressionist era. This is a very fine painting by Degas.

Salvador Dali 1951

One of the most famous paintings depicting the crucifixion on public display in the UK is that by Dali which hangs in the Kelvingrove Gallery in Glasgow. It is for such an eccentric personality as Dali a strangely traditional interpretation. The council in Glasgow bought the painting for around £8000 in the early 1950′s. It is believed that the Spanish Government have since offered £80M but Glasgow declined to sell.

Two programmes worth catching this week.

Joan Mitchell

Tuesday 3 April; Sky arts 1 at 7.00pm: Joan Mitchell-Portrait of an Abstract Artist.

This documentary was produced, directed and written by the late Marion Cajori – art-aficionado. The programme is a bit and paste of Joan Mitchell’s best interviews. But it is a fascinating insight into Mitchell’s original art- colourful pictures of great intensity. She is best described as an abstract expressionist and is most commonly associated the American artists who dominated post the Second world War. It would be fair to say that Mitchell,along with such artists as Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock, is credited with pushing New York to the centre of the Western art world. But Joan Mitchell spent much of her career in France but she is still regarded as one of a very small number of leading female artists who helped to define post War American art. She herself was greatly influenced by Vincent Van Gogh. This documentary includes interviews of influential artists and critics of the period. A truly insightful appreciation of the work of Joan Mitchell.

Thursday 5 April: BBC 4 at 9.00pm: Sex and Sensibility-The Allure of Art Nouveau.

Gustav Klimt

The last in the series focuses on the impact of Art Nouveau in Vienna where this movement tranformed the city’s art and architecture in the late 1800’2 and early 1900′s. Presenter Stephen Smith examines the “jugendstil” aesthetic revolution.

Thursday 29 March BBC 4 at 9.00pm: “Sex and Sensbility: The Allure of Art Nouveau”:

An excellent series of three programmes on the impact of Art Nouveau on British art and design. The series is presented by Stephen Smith and examines among others the work of Aubrey Bearsdley and Charles Rennie Macintosh. The first programme in the series explores the influence of objects of Art Nouveau from Paris impacted on the cityscapes of the UK. The programmes range across many genre including ceramics, internal and external design and glass making. Among the many locations visited is the iconic art work at Maxim’s restaurant. Stephen Smith also explores the impact on social change.

Angela Wakefield: landscape art

Forget your prejudices about North of England art. It is not all grime and grey. Angela Wakefield captures the North of England and other urban scenes with vibrancy and colour.
She was born in Accrington, Lancashire and from an early age displayed an natural flair for panting and drawing.

Since graduating with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, Angela has been a full-time artist since 1999.

Edinburgh; Royal Mile

Angela is developing into one of the most recognised urban landscape artist of her generation. Her original art includes her native North of England but also extends to London, Edinburgh and New York.

She is attracted to the transformation which occurs in many cities when night falls and the lights in shops, restaurants, pubs, streets start to twinkle. To Angela the day-time grime is transformed into fairgrounds.

Frank McFadden: Figurative art

So many artists have had troubled personal lives – Van Gough to mention but one. Add to that legion – Frank McFadden, Glasgow born artist.

Frank trained as a graphic designer and worked for a time as a signwriter. Unfortunately, his life span out of control and Frank McFadden became a heroin addict and was reduced to selling the Big Issue.

Joined at the tip

A chance meeting in a Glasgow cafe with Peter Howson proved to be life changing. Encouraged by Peter Howson with whom he shares a studio, Frank conquered his addiction and has developed into a talented artist.

In his earliest work Frank McFadden was clearly influenced by Howson’s highly individualised style much of which is of a grotesque genre. Howson and McFadden obviously inspire each other and have been involved in joint exhibitions.

Frank McFadden is now a highly collectable artist with a string of supporters in his native Scotland and further a field including London.

Natalia Avdeeva: realism

Natalia Avdeeva: Landscape artist.

Natalia Avdeeva comes from a family full of artists and architects and so it is no surprise that Natalia developed into a very fine painter producing original art. She would describe her style as dramatic realism.

She was born in the attractive region of Altari which is a mountain range in central Asia where China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Russia meet. The region is the source of the rivers Ob and Irtysh. The dramatic and imposing landscapes of her native land where a source of inspiration to Natalia.

Her education as an artist started in Barnaul School of Fine Art before continuing her studies in St. Petersburg. Following a period teaching art, Natalia moved to London where she completed a Diploma in Portraiture at the Heatherley School of Fine Art.

London streetscapes provide much of the subject matter for Natalia’s more recent affordable art.

Natalia is a very fine portrait artist and is delighted to accept commissions.

Reality TV hits the art world with this import from the US. It was first broadcast in the US in 2010 so if you want to know the outcome stay away from Wikipedia which gives a blow by blow account of all 10 episodes.

Wed 22 Feb at 8.00pm: Sky Arts 1 “Work of Art: The Next Great Artist”:

Work of Art: The Next Great Artist is a reality TV show from the USA. Over 10 episodes 14 contestants attempt to win the prize of $100,000 and a solo exhibition. The contestants undertake various commissions from portraits to sculpture to landscape with the stress on creativity as opposed to technique. ” The series of programmes are interesting but I doubt if it will grab the nation’s attention like Strictly”. It will be of great interest to all budding artists. Depending on your view of reality TV programmes the good/bad news is that a second series has already been broadcast in the USA.

Art programmes on the telly.

We have been moaning for a few weeks about the lack on art programmes on the telly. Then a blockbuster comes along.

Thursday 9 Feb 2012: Sky Arts 2 at 6.00pm: Tim Marlow on David Hockney:

This is a programme not the be missed. Presenter Tim Marlow provides a guide to David Hockney’s exhibition at the Royal Academy in London ” A Bigger Picture” This exhibition proves that Britain’s favourite living artist is still highly creative at 75. The exhibition not only shows Hockney’s continuing creativity but also his love of new technology. You will not be disappointed
