Natalia Avdeeva: Landscape artist.

Natalia Avdeeva comes from a family of full of artists and architects and so it is no surprise that Natalia developed into a very fine painter producing original art. She would describe her style as dramatic realism.

She was born in the attractive region of Altari which is a mountain range in central Asia where China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Russia meet. The region is the source of the rivers Ob and Irtysh. The dramatic and imposing landscapes of her native land where a source of inspiration to Natalia.

Her education as an artist started in Barnaul School of Fine Art before continuing her studies in St. Petersburg. Following a period teaching art, Natalia moved to London where she completed a Diploma in Portraiture at the Heatherley School of Fine Art.

London streetscapes provide much of the subject matter for Natalia’s more recent affordable art.

Natalia is a very fine portrait artist and is delighted to accept commissions.

Art on the telly this week:

Last week we had no art programmes to recommend. Having scoured the pages of TV Times looking at all the terrestrial channels and Sky Channels we could find anything to recommend and it isn’t much better this week With art exhibitions drawing record crowds in London there is clearly a market for the visual arts. We cannot all get to London so TV bosses – do better and get some more art on the telly.
What we did notice was the large number of programmes on polar bears- they are everywhere. There seems to be a channel – Eden- devoted to polar bears. So just in case you missed the 75 progs last week on polar bears, here is a picture of a polar bear.

Monday 30 Jan. 2012; Art and the City: Sky Arts 1 at 7.30pm:

The presenter David Keeps explores how artists depicted the devastation wrecked by Hurricane Katrina, back in August 2005.

Monday 30 Jan 2012: Jeff Koons:Beyond Heaven: Sky Arts 1 at 7.30pm:

This is a really interesting programme.
Jeff Koons is a former Wall Street broker who has become a celebrity artist. His work is certainly challenging and he has as many detractors as fans. He attempts to turn banal items into original art. With one’s of his works selling at almost £13m he certainly has something going. This is a fascinating programme in which Koons discusses the development of his art throughout his career.

Sara Sherwood’s passion for painting inspired her to abandon a career in the corporate world in 2005 to pursue her passion and become a full-time artist. Her life has certainly changed dramatically and is like a butterfly moving from place to place, experience to experience and regards the world as her studio.

Thursday 19 Jan: BBC 4 at 10.00pm “Fig Leaf: The biggest cover up in history”.

The life of the fig leaf in art is explored by Stephen Smith. The use of the fig leaf as a token to modest is well know in Renaissance art. The humble fig leaf can cause great controversy when works of art are being restored. Should the fig leaf be restored or removed? Was the fig leaf part of the original work of art or was it added latter by some unknown censor? Isn’t surprising how such an insignificant piece of vegetation can be controversial?

But this is a fascinating programme in which Stephen Smith reveals the secret, 2000 year history of the fig leaf. He examines among others the original art of Michelangelo, Bernini and Rodin. The programme also explores the attitude to sexuality as it has changed/developed over the centuries up to today.

Michel Alford: figurative artist:

Michael Alford is now a well respected and much collected artist living in London. But his first degree was taken at Durham University where he studied modern languages – Arabic and Spanish. His childhood was split between the UK and Germany which perhaps influenced his decision to become a war artist in Afghanistan in 2010 where he accompanied the 1st. Battalion Grenadier Guards. Afghanistan gave him to opportunity to display his talent for exploring how figures inter-relate with landscapes.

After university, Michael studied art at both Slade School and Chelsea School of Art. Since then he has been a full time artist being both a painter and a muralist.

Perhaps Michael Alford is best known for his sensitive interpretation of contemporary life though his figurative art. But he is also a very fine landscape artist.

Joan Mitchell

Two programmes worth catching this week and both are on Sky Arts 1 , a channel which is only available on satellite. It is a barren period for art programmes on BBC. We might need to start a campaign for more art programmes on BBC. Having said that the interview of David Hockney last Sunday on “Country File” was sensational. More of that please on BBC.

Wed 11 Jan: 7.00pm: Sky Arts 1 : Joan Mitchell-Portrait of an Abstract Artist:

The American abstract artist, Joan Mitchell gave this interview just a few months before her death in 1992, aged 67. She was an important member of the abstract expressionist movement of painters in the USA. Although american, she lived for much of her life in France where she was a partner of the Canadian painter Jean_Paul Riopelle. It is probably an understatement to say their relationship was tumultuous. Mitchell was an admirer of the work of Vincent van Gogh. She was one of the few female painters of her generation to gain critical and public acclaim.

Friday 13 Jan: 7.30 pm. Skay Arts 1 Tim Marlow: Great Artists.

Whistler's Mother

This week Tim Marlow, art historian, reviews the work of American born but UK based artist- James McNeill Whistler who is best known for his portrait – “Whistler’s Mother”.

Thursday 29 Dec: Sky Arts 2 at 7.30 pm: The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman.

Tim Marlow presents this programme which features a tour of the current exhibition at the British Museum, London. The exhibition showcases the work of ceramists, potter, Turner Prize winning artist, Grayson Perry alongside alongside historic artefacts which Perry has gleaned from the Museum’s vast store.

The result is an unbelievable kaleidoscope of world history as interpreted by Grayson Perry which, as you might expect, is less than conventional. It took more than two years to assemble this exhibition. So there are tombs, pots, craft and lots of history. As always with Tim Marlow the programme is intelligently and sympathetically presented.

Starry Night by van Gogh

Well! – the outstanding programme to catch this week is on BBC 4 “The Art of the Night” which was made by ZCZ and is also out on DVD.

Wednesday 21 Dec: BBC 4 at 9.00pm: The Art of the Night.

The programme and is presented by Waldemar Januszczak. And you guest right – it does feature Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. But the question posed by the programme is why have so many great artists painted at night when to say the least the light is difficult and problematic. But darkness adds so much to many paintings. Caravaggio was a master at catching light and shade. Darkness adds drama and mystery to paintings. The programme reflects on the relationship between so many well known artists and the night. Among those featured are of course – Van Gogh but also Rembrandt, Velazquez and Magaritte. The programme is being broadcast at the winter solstice. How appropriate. Tune in, you will enjoy it.

Wednesday 21 Dec: Sky Arts 1 at 8.00pm ICONOCLASTS SERIES 5.

This is a new episode in this long running series. This programme is interestingly presented by David Blaine who interviews Chuck Close, the visual artist. Blaine investigates how Close manipulates reality and is not prepared to accept restrictions and so produces astonishing original art.

Art on the telly:

Sorry but missed the rerun of the excellent series on Leonardo da Vinci. No doubt this has been prompted by the sell out exhibition of Leonardo at the Nation Gallery in London. The first programme in the series was shown on BBC 2 at 11.20pm. on Tuesday 13 Dec. There are two more programmes to follow during which the presenter – Alan Yentob explores da Vinci’s fascinating life. You can watch the first episode – Leonardo – on the BBC iplayer. Click here

Not a lot on this week. In fact we only have two programmes to recommend but both are fascinating.

Tuesday 13 Dec: BBC 4 at 11.55pm: Vatican – Hidden World.

Following the pope’s recent visit to the UK, the BBC was given extended access for a year to the Vatican.
This intriguing expose on life in the Vatican does not only focus on the unbelievable art treasures to be found there. For

example there is a detailed examination of a testimony signed under duress by Galileo. But for art lovers there is an explanation of the ceiling of the Sistine chapel by the on-site curators. All in all a fascinating look at the smallest and one of the most influential sovereign state in the world.

Tuesday 13 Dec: Sky arts 1 at 7.00pm: Antony Gormley and the Fourth Plinth.

A reprise of the happening in Trafalgar Square. In the summer more than 2000 people from around Britain and their 60 minutes of fame atop a plinth in Trafalgar Square. It was all orchestrated over 100 days by Antony Gormley. This programme catches those moments many of which were hilarious and/or outrageous. Excellent fare at this time of the year when only pigeons would perch on a plinth.
