Jo Whitney – landscape art
Having trained at the Sir John Cass College in London Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in Oxford, Jo has since travelled the world and her art represents those travels in unique and beautiful ways.
At first, Jo lived in Cornwall and she has a great series of pictures from her time in the South of England. ‘Bodmin Moor 3′ is just one of the many oil canvases she painted while living in the beautiful and haunting countryside.
Jo Whitney – figurative art
Her works in London not only cover cityscapes, but often have people in very ordinary situations which make emotional and touching oil paintings which can be very intimate. ‘Saturday in a Portobello road pub’ is a great example of this work.
Jo also did similar paintings in Nice, Venice and Ravello. The paintings she made were all accurate depictions of both Italians and tourists as they enjoyed the beautiful weather for which Italy is renown. Again, the paintings are mixes of people, landscapes and cityscapes which capture the relaxed and beautiful lifestyle.
Her time in Cuba again brought Jo into contact with locals in their environment. Her ability to portray cultural scenes is inspiring.
Lady in Black at Hotel Nacionale, Havana is a study in contrasts, showing an elegant beautiful woman in a city which also has poverty which is shown in other of her paintings. In fact another one of her paintings depicts the pianist in the Hotel Nacionale who is working where the rich lady in black plays.
Now Jo is living in Scotland and again her paintings are a study in contrasts. From showing working people in that environment, to breath taking landscapes like ‘Isle of May, with approaching boat’. Jo’s oil paintings are truly stunning and her work is prolific.
Jo had a solo exhibition in July 16-23, 2010 at Alpha Art in Edinburgh titled “La Serenissima – at Work and Play’ which aptly sums up Jo’s stylistic sense. More of Jo Whitney’s original art can be found on her website: http://www.jo-whitney.co.uk/
