Nicholas Chapman – sculpture
Nicholas Chapman was born to George and Kate Chapman in late September of 1956, at a hospital in Colchester, Essex. His father, George, was a successful artist, producing etchings, paintings, as well as drawings, and exhibiting in Cambridge and London during his lifetime. Nicholas spent his early years near the eastern coast of England at Norwich, and then the bulk of his life in Wales, where his father moved the family in the early 1960′s. Presently, the artist works and resides in Llanarth, near the coast of Wales.
Lee Chapman from printer to sculptor
In his mid-teens, Chapman attended the London College of Printing, learning the craft of silk screen. Later while supporting his family, he worked in building construction as well as construction of interiors. These principles no doubt influenced his ideas and ability in sculpture and design. Chapman works in stone, metal, wood, and marble, amongst other materials. As a reflection of his principles and beliefs, he chooses to employ entirely recycled materials whenever possible. Describing what went into his thought processes while creating “Domino Effect,” Chapman relates, “The relationship we have with nature depends on us making the right decisions, respecting…replenishing, and not just taking.”
Many of Chapman’s pieces are in the form of working clocks. But these clocks don’t simply tell time, they tell of time. Themes of time’s transience and passage, reflected upon in an almost Tantalusian manner, are the visual impression on the viewer. Nothing can be grasped of it, except for knowledge of its passing.
Additionally, Nicholas Chapman’s sculptures often correlate with his poetry, with one originating out of the other. Concerns about the impact of humans on the environment and on each other wind throughout the many facet’s of Chapman’s art.
