Zanna Wilson: producing original art

Zanna Wilson has gained fame for her oil and beeswax canvases. At Leith School of Art, Zanna Wilson learned  to paint with oil and  beeswax. Although beeswax is not her only medium,  the main part of her work is in this medium with raw ground pigments  mixed with oil. Zanna Wilson’s original art often depicts abstract interpretations of Scottish landscapes.

Oil and Beeswax;the technique explained

Oil and beeswax is referred to as encaustic or wax encaustic which can be a sculptural or textural painting method with the wax allowing the surface of the paint to be carved, buffed and burnished. The simplest encaustic mixture can be made from adding pigments to beeswax. Zanna Wilson’s approach is through a  mixture of oil paints. Because wax is used as the pigment binder, Zanna Wilson’s canvases can be sculpted as well as painted.

This technique was notably used in the Fayum mummy portraits from Egypt around 100-300 AD, in the Blachernitissa and other early icons, but more recently in contemporary art with artists such as  American artist  Jasper Johns.

Jasper Johns original art of maps, flags, and targets encouraged the move from Abstract Expressionism toward an emphasis on the concrete. Jasper Johns contemporary art laid the groundwork for both Pop Art and Minimalism.
